Another day and more aches in the ribs. Was going to chill during the day,
but 'Phil' bought a ‘new style’ Carbon Fibre model glider and a 1.5M
kite. Went to the farmer’s field and mucked about with the plane. Best
way to launch was using a launch method similar to throwing a discuss which
achieved flight stats of about 100m. Tried to fly the kite, but it was not
windy enough.
Read the instructions and realised that there is a catapult method to
launching the plane. Went into town and bought 5M of Elastic and 10M of
cord to make the catapult, but when we got back to the field the wind had
picked up too much so we launched the kite!
Although very much a trainer kite it was obvious that kite design had moved
on since my last attempts about 12 years ago. Much more fun and excitement
even from 1.5M Kite.
As the evening drew on we decided to go to the beach as the wind had picked
up. We launched the Phoenix with a 4.2M sail and the plan was to
reintroduce Phil to windsurfing. Phil’s goal was to ‘Beach start’
Although possible a bit ambitious, we had success on the forth attempt and
some good sailing in the steadily increasing winds. When Phil had had
enough I jumped onto the board to sail in but hit a wave, pumped twice and
was on the plane (no harness or foot-straps in sight!)
Nice to get back on the board, but the ribs still hurt like hell!
Such a varied day that it has to get 4 stars even though Model Glider
flying is not on the Activity list and may be a bit geeky (hense not 5
stars)
